The Stoneybatter Files

The Stoneybatter Files and Greetings, Hero

are end-nodes on the web. They are unashamedly artistic works, which does not imply that they are difficult to read. At least six have been published in print, two have won prizes. I do not indicate which, because the decision to publish is taken more often than not on the basis of length and subject and not on artistic merit.

Influences

I don't think of my writing as appealing to a particular taste, in the way some people prefer cheddar and some prefer stilton. To me each piece is an attempt to take control. They are tools for living - or aspire to be. I do not seek to destroy illusions about the world, perhaps because I begin from a position where I have very few and build up from there.

Here are some writers I love and who have influenced who I am, if not my writing.

J.G. Ballard, Colin Wilson, Hermann Hesse, Isaac Babel, Philip K. Dick, Friedrich Nietzsche, Heraclitus, Ian McEwan, David Wheldon, David Brooks, Damon Calgut, Joyce Carol Oates, Nathanael West, Stanislaw Lem, John Fowles, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Joseph Conrad, James Clarence Mangan, Carson McCullers, Albert Camus, Saint Augustine, Don DeLillo, Jonathan Franzen, Lagerquist, Franz Kafka, Goethe (Die Leiden des jungen Werthers), George Russell (AE), Thomas Mann,

I have maintained a dialogue with William Blake in my head for years.
